Who We Are
The Z&S is an active member of seed industry associations and groups including the American Seed Trade Association ( ATSA) , California Seed Association ( CSA). From 2006-2007 President Merv Selvidge served as Chairman for ASTA's annual Vegetable & Flower Seed Conference and from 2012 to 2015 he served as Western Regional Vice President for ATSA.
Merv has over 40 years of seed industry experience that includes management and ownership of Quali-Sel and Synergene Seed, a company that sold its brassica and lettuce genetics to Syngenta in 2009 .
Merv has been an active member of Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club for over 30 years. He continues to serve for Rotary's weekly Meals on Wheels programs and the annual Sea Otter Classic, an event that brings thousands of cyclists and guests to the Monterey Peninsula each spring and raises money for hundreds of local charities.
Francisco Zaragoza, owner and manager of Z&S, began farming and held ownership in G&Z Farms until 2004. From 1988 through 2009 Francisco was an owner/ manager of Synergene Seed where he was responsible for growing seed crops , milling, greenhouse production, R&D for inbred pollination and hybrid advancement.
Today Francisco is responsible for attracting and maintaining some of the most experienced vegetable production teams, and for advancement of the Z&S seed production and milling operations.
Z&S dedicated to supporting local public and private schools , 4-H programs and Future Farmers of America. Z&S employs over 20 full time, part time and contract workers annually, all with strong ties and experience in the vegetable seed industry.
The Carl Enosara has worked in the seed industry since 1979, first with Quali-Sel and then with Synergene. Carl has experience in seed testing, processing and shipping and is rumored to be one fo the best seed coating experts in the industry. After five years working as a Plant Lead for Syngenta in Salinas, California , Carl has returned to work for Z&S to advance the company's processing division, which recently acquired seed priming technologies to assist clients with growing challenges faced in desert production areas such as Yuma, Arizona and King City, California. Carl also leads the seed milling and coating teams , that process thousands of pounds of lettuce, celery, brassica, chard, mustard, carrot and onion seeds per year.
Z&S production is lead by managers and staff who have been in seed production for over 40 years. Lettuce seed is produced in the San Joaquin Valley with early production harvested as early as June. Brassica seed is produced in the Salinas Valley with early production harvested as early as March.
Z&S is a certified organic lettuce seed producer, with certification from CCOF. The 2016 crop is now being contracted.
Seed milling, cleaning, conditioning , coating, priming and processing services are available for all small seed vegetable crops including; lettuce, celery, brassicas, onion, carrot, kale, mustards, and arugula. Large seed for beans and melons, squash and legumes.
